    Connect your Instagram account

Professional accounts, direct or Facebook connection, permissions, and troubleshooting

Connect a professional Instagram account to your ContentMate workspace to schedule posts, review analytics and handle direct messages and comments. Authentication takes place with Instagram or Facebook. ContentMate does not need your Instagram password.

    Requirements

    • Your Instagram profile is a Business or Creator account. A personal Instagram account cannot use this connection.
    • You can sign in to the correct Instagram account and complete any security challenge it presents.
    • You have selected the correct ContentMate workspace and your workspace role allows you to connect social accounts.
    • Your plan allows another connected account. Signing in again does not bypass an account limit.
    • To connect through Facebook, you also need access to the Facebook Page linked to the Instagram account.

A Facebook Page is not required for the direct Instagram connection. You still need a professional Business or Creator account. Publishing Stories through connected applications has additional platform requirements; see the scheduling guide.

    Choose a connection method

MethodWhere you sign inWhen to use it
Connect InstagramDirectly with InstagramYou want to connect a professional Instagram account without a Facebook Page
Connect FacebookWith Facebook, followed by selecting the Page and linked Instagram accountYour team already manages Instagram through a Facebook Page and wants to use that association

Both methods can support publishing, analytics, messages and comments. The permissions you grant and the access held by the signed-in account determine which functions are available. Direct Instagram login does not inherently mean missing analytics. A successful sign-in also does not prove that every permission was granted.

Do not connect the same Instagram account through both methods simultaneously. ContentMate detects an existing connection through the other method. Keep a working connection unless you have a specific reason to change it.

    Connect directly with Instagram

    1. Open Workspace settings and the section for connected social accounts.
    2. Select Connect Instagram on the Instagram card.
    3. Check the username in Instagram's authorization dialog. If you manage several profiles, the last account used in the browser may not be the intended one.
    4. Sign in with Instagram and complete any two-factor authentication prompt.
    5. Review and grant the requested permissions for your profile, publishing, insights, messages and comments.
    6. Complete the dialog and wait until you return to ContentMate.
    7. Under Connected accounts, check that the correct Instagram profile appears in the intended workspace.

Connecting an account does not publish a post or send a message. Those actions take place only when you subsequently request them in ContentMate or approve and schedule a post.

    Connect through Facebook

    1. Open the account settings in the intended workspace and select Connect Facebook.
    2. Sign in using the Facebook account authorized to manage the linked Page.
    3. Grant access to the required Page and its Instagram account. Selecting a Page later in ContentMate cannot grant permission that you declined in Facebook's dialog.
    4. After returning, select the desired Page and its associated Instagram account.
    5. Confirm the selection and check the connected profiles.

If Instagram is missing from the selection, first check the link between the Page and professional Instagram account, as well as your Facebook Page access. Repeatedly signing in with an account that lacks access to that Page will not resolve the issue. Direct Instagram login is a separate alternative if you want to use that method for the account.

    What each permission does

Permission areaHow ContentMate uses itTypical consequence of missing access
Profile and mediaIdentify the account and read its existing contentThe profile or media cannot be loaded
PublishingTransfer and publish approved feed posts, Reels and supported StoriesThe account appears connected, but publishing fails
InsightsImport available account and media metricsAnalytics requests more permissions or lacks current data
MessagesReceive Instagram direct messages and reply within the permitted windowMessages are missing or replies are rejected
CommentsRead, reply to and moderate comments on the account's mediaComment threads or moderation actions are unavailable

These permissions are requested together during connection. If you grant only some of them, scheduling may work while analytics or messages require additional authorization. Platform permission and workspace role are separate: One member connecting Instagram does not automatically give every team member permission to publish or moderate.

    Check the connection

    Planner

Open the planner and confirm that the Instagram account can be selected as a destination. Use the username and profile picture to distinguish multiple accounts. Avoid unintentionally scheduling the same post for two profiles.

    Analytics

Select the Instagram account and a suitable date range. ContentMate imports available data in the background. An empty view immediately after connecting does not necessarily indicate a failed authorization. Check the data timestamp and import status. The metrics reference explains what the numbers mean and how they are calculated.

    Inbox

Select the account, then Messages or Comments. A conversation is not necessarily a comment thread, and a public comment does not automatically start a private conversation. If messages are missing, also check whether Instagram allows connected tools to access messages.

    Reconnect or add missing permissions

Use Reconnect for the affected account, or start the appropriate Instagram/Facebook connection from settings. Select the same profile and grant the required permissions. Another Instagram profile has different posts and data even if the same person manages it.

Authorization may need renewing after permissions are revoked, Meta security settings change, or an older connection lacks a requested permission. ContentMate renews valid access in the background. Do not remove an existing connection as a precaution: removing it is not the required first step when one permission is missing.

    Troubleshoot a specific issue

    ProblemWhat to check next
A personal profile is rejectedCheck that Instagram identifies it as a professional Business or Creator account
The wrong profile was connectedCheck the active account in Instagram's authorization dialog and the target workspace
Instagram is missing during Facebook connectionCheck the Page association, Page access and selections in Facebook's permission dialog
The account is already connected another wayReview its current association before switching methods or disconnecting it
Only one feature requests permissionAdd that permission; a visible connection alone does not confirm access to every feature
Sign-in was cancelled or the return link is invalidStart a fresh connection from your signed-in workspace; do not reuse an old return link
The account is connected but analytics is emptyCheck the date range, data timestamp and import status; allow the background import to complete
A control is missing or an action is refusedAlso check your workspace role and your plan's account limit

    Remove a connection

Before selecting Remove → Disconnect, check for scheduled posts and open conversations associated with the account. A disconnected account cannot execute further publishing or messaging requests. Reconnecting is not a backup mechanism or a guarantee that all previous workspace data will be restored.

If Disconnecting appears, revocation is still being processed and the account may temporarily remain in the list. Disconnecting does not automatically delete posts already published on Instagram. You can also manage the application's access in your Instagram/Meta settings.

Checked against the product and official Meta documentation on 11 October 2026.
